Frequently Asked Questions About Stone

Frequently Asked Questions About Stone

  • Q: What is Engineered Stone?
  • A: Engineered Stone or Engineered Quartz is a manmade stone product made from 90-95% crushed quartz in a resin polymer slab.
  • Q: Where do Granites come from?
  • A: Granite is a naturally occurring igneous rock which is found in many countries around the world. India, Brazil & Norway are some of the more prominent countries producing the raw product with processing occurring in these countries along with Italy and China. Edstein Creative source a number of Granites direct and import these to make up a range of stock colours and all other materials are sourced from wholesalers throughout Australia.
  • Q: Should I use Engineered Quartz or Natural Stone?
  • A: There are a number of factors that should be considered when choosing a stone surface. Both Engineered Stone and Natural Stone such as Granite are hard wearing and suitable for use in a kitchen benchtop application. Colour and design are the main factors and we recommend that lighter colours like whites and creams tend to be more durable in the range of Engineered Stone whereas the Blacks and Darker colours tend to have a better finish and are more durable in Natural Granites.
  • Q: Does Engineered Stone require sealing?
  • A: No, Engineered Stone has a resin polymer base therefore sealants will not penetrate the surface so they prove ineffective.
  • Q: How do I clean my Quartz Bench?
  • A: For every day cleaning we suggest the use of a micro fibre cloth with mild soapy water. For more stubborn marks we stock a range of cleaning products designed specifically for use on both engineered and natural stone. You can also use a spray and wipe type product and paper towel to clean your work surface.
  • Q: Does Granite require Sealing? If so how often?
  • A: Yes, Granite is a natural Stone and therefore has some level of porosity so an impregnating sealer is used to safeguard the stone from staining. Sealing is usually carried out in our factory prior to shipping so initial sealing is completed ready for use when the installation is complete. The sealers used today usually have a life of approximately 8 years but all stone should be monitored and any signs of water marks or discolouration indicate the stone requires resealing. We stock the Lithofin range of sealers and care products and regular use of a care wax will greatly enhance the performance of your Natural Stone top.
  • Q: Are Granite and Engineered stone the same price?
  • A: No in each range of materials there are different price points. Some of the more exclusive ranges of Engineered stone sit well above mid-range Granite, there generally is a product that will meet your taste and budget in each of the materials.
  • Q: Can I have the sink and cooktop cut outs?
  • A: No. Edstein Creative cut these out in the factory and the process cannot always save the offcut so it is our policy to not offer the cut outs.
  • Q: Can I place a hot saucepan on my stone top?
  • A: No. Natural Stone and Engineered Quartz can both suffer from Thermal Shock through rapid expansion so we always recommend the use of a cutting board or trivet between the hot item such as an electric frypan, slow cooker, saucepan or dish from the oven and the benchtop.
  • Q: Where can I view your range of stone?
  • A: Edstein Creative Stone has three showrooms all with extensive samples of the various range of products available. Our Sandgate showroom has a wide variety of colours and edges on display in full kitchens and bathrooms so it provides a wide variety of ideas for consideration.
  • Q: Can I select my own slabs of Natural Stone and chose how the stone will be cut?
  • A: Yes. In todays electronic age Edstein Creative have the ability to take a digital photograph of the Natural Stone and overlay a CAD drawing to show how the material will be cut. This services ensures clients with particular requirements are catered for.
